Branch donates £150 to NUJ charities

At the recent AGM, the Branch resolved to give £50 to each of the union's three charities as a gesture of support. Each charity does important work and like everyone reliant on the stock market for income, has been hit by declining share values of recent years.

The three charities are The Provident Fund, the George Viner Memorial Fund and the Members in Need Fund.

The Provident Fund is the oldest of the three and aims to help the dependents of dead union members in serious need. Help is usually in the form of a small regular income.

The Members in Need Fund was set up in 1992 in recognition of the fact that the Provident Fund was unable to meet the needs of living members suffering hardship. The fund mostly makes small one-off grants to meet specific needs such as household bills.

The George Viner Memorial Fund makes annual grants to black students starting on journalism courses and having difficulty paying fees. It also helps to increase the numbers of black journalists entering the profession.
